AVLRR Trails are not officially open, ride with caution. If you find an issue, don't drive by it, fix it or mark it. Snowmobileing on the South Mtn is quite good for Dec. However the early HEAVY snow has pulled down a lot of bushes and wire burch across the trails. Grooming can't start until these get cut back. EVERYONE is encouraged to grab a saw and help clear the trails. Groomer Drivers can't be expected to cut their way through the trails. Here is some areas we found on Sunday. PLEASE HELP, Many hands will make light work. # 4 from KS 29 to KS 27 is impassable # 2 between KS 31 and KS 29 needs brushing #101 between KS 34 and KS 31 is impassable #101 bridge where Salmontail runs out has a large tree over head near KS 47, need an experienced crew on that one. #101 (hooker trail) needs brushing between KS 33 and KS 25 I'm sure there is more. The 2008 SANS Trail Permits are available. The Dec 15th deadline has not been changed for early bird pricing. Buy before Dec 15th for a chance to win $100 in FREE Gas. Trail development groups have until March 7 to apply for a part of the next round of funding assistance available under the Off-highway Vehicle Infrastructure Fund.
Trail projects can receive up to 50 per cent of a project's total cost, usually up to $50,000, from the infrastructure fund, which is financed by off-highway vehicle owners and administered by the Off-highway Vehicle Ministerial Advisory Committee.
Each year when off-highway vehicle owners register vehicles, they contribute $40 toward the fund. Only those owners who contribute to the fund are permitted to use the trails.
"By investing in the infrastructure fund, owners are investing in the future acceptance and sustainability of the sport," said Laurie Cranton, chair of the Off-highway Vehicle Ministerial Advisory Committee. "We have already forwarded $809,837
under this program to multi-use, snowmobile and off-highway trail groups since May of 2007. As groups become more familiar with the process, we are looking forward to receiving even more applications, and an expanded number of trails for use."
To be eligible for the cost-shared funding, projects must meet certain conditions, like avoiding vulnerable areas and contributing to environmental protection, making the most of existing infrastructure, and encouraging shared use.
The Off-highway Vehicle Ministerial Advisory Committee developed the process for assessing funding applications and distributing the infrastructure fund. The process allows funding applications to be received and analyzed by the advisory committee. Formal recommendations and funding amounts are then submitted to the ministers of Health Promotion and Protection and Natural Resources for final approval.
More information and the application for the Off-highway Vehicle Infrastructure Fund Trails Program can be found on the website at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/ohv/fund.asp .
Completed applications must be sent to the OHV Ministerial Advisory Committee, Trails Subcommittee, c/o Vanda Jackson, 5516 Spring Garden Rd., 4th Floor, Halifax, N.S., B3J 1G6.
